Joining Auckland arborists on a Kauri Dieback information day in November 2017. Arborists are key stakeholders in the fight against dieback.

Aranovus Research focuses on people. People and communities are increasingly engaging with environmental issues and not only want their voice to be heard, they want to be part of the solution. This can be a challenge for organisations, policy-makers and environmental managers who have to juggle the interests of many stakeholders. Well founded information gathered independently removes perceptions of bias, reduces tension in relationships and often identifies a smoother way forward.

To support complex decision-making, Aranovus Research undertakes robust and rigorous social research through:
  • Surveys
  • Community Consultation Initiatives / Facilitation
  • Social Impact Assessments
  • Science communication initiatives
  • Social Research

We have the skills and experience to provide clients with a clear understanding of how people perceive and engage with environmental matters that are important to them.

Work in the Biosecurity Space

Kauri Dieback

Kauri Dieback is a complex biological problem with a significant human dimension.  Kauri is an iconic forest species in northern New Zealand .  Kauri is now threatened by a disease that is spreading and killing trees.  I have been engaged by the Ministry of Primary Industries as an independent voice in the following ways:
  • Appointed to the Independent Panel for Accelerating Protection of Kauri (2018)
  • Appointed to the Strategic Science Advisory Group (SSAG 2018 onwards).  As the social scientist on the group I advise  MPI on how social science may inform Kauri Dieback research initiatives.
  • Kauri Dieback Technical Advisory Group (TAG): The TAG was  established to co-ordinate the response of central and local government to kauri dieback.   I provided social science advice when the TAG was formally assembled in 2010 and 2013.

Biosecurity 2025

I was asked by MPI to act as a 'thought leader' for the Biosecurity 2025 consultation process in September 2017 and then at the policy launch in November 2017.
